Morning brief, Tuesday 13 October (dry run)

Here's your dry run brief for Tuesday 13 October. Nothing is saved anywhere; the drafts are at the bottom for you to check.

    Check before you act

    • "Account security team", Urgent: verify your payment details. Looks like a scam: random sender domain, a 24 hour threat and a request for card details. Don't click anything. If you're unsure, log in to your hosting account directly.
    • Acme Planner, Your trial ends in 3 days. Asks for a card by Friday. If you started this trial and want to keep it, add the card inside the app, not through the email.

Three things that need you today

    1. Before 10:00, work out a rough go-live date for Northwind's subscriptions and print the shop layout.
    2. Decide whether you can do Brightpath's refresh for $4,000 (down from $4,500) before their 11:00 call.
    3. The Brightpath video call starts the minute the cafe meeting ends, so plan where you'll take it.

    Today's calendar

    • 09:00 to 09:30 Team check-in (video)
    • 10:00 to 11:00 Northwind Coffee kickoff, Harbour Street cafe. Bring the shop layout printout and a rough subscriptions go-live date.
    • 11:00 to 11:45 Brightpath Consulting, site refresh (video). No gap after the cafe; they may join 10 minutes late, which gives you a little room.
    • 15:00 to 16:00 Dentist

    Email

    Needs you today

    • Brightpath Consulting, Site refresh, budget (2 emails): budget is now $4,000, they want a November start, and they ask if 11:00 is still on.
    • Northwind Coffee, Tomorrow's kickoff: wants a rough go-live date to tell regulars at the Christmas market.

    Reply this week

    • Bakery, Re: Cake preorders before Christmas: said yes, wants a quote this week, live by 20 November.
    • Dental clinic, Re: Booking page proposal: wants check-up booking only to start, asks the cost.

    1. Brightpath Consulting (reply in "Re: Site refresh, budget")

    Hi,

Thanks for the update. Yes, the 11:00 call is still on, and no problem if you're 10 minutes late.

On the budget: [ask: whether you can do the refresh for $4,000, and if so whether it's the full scope or a trimmed one]. [ask: whether a November start works for you]. Happy to go through the details on the call.

    2. Northwind Coffee (reply in "Tomorrow's kickoff", worth sending before 10:00)

    Hi,

Looking forward to it too. Yes, I'll bring a rough idea of when the subscriptions could go live. When is the Christmas market? That's the date I'll plan back from.

See you at 10:00 at Harbour Street, with the shop layout printout.

    How a normal run works

This was a dry run, so I saved nothing. On a normal run with the Gmail connector on, I'll ask "Save these drafts to Gmail?" and, only if you say yes, save each one as a draft reply in its thread for you to check and send yourself. If the connector can't save drafts, I'll say so and leave them here to copy. I never send, forward, archive, delete or label anything.

Say "go ahead" if you're happy for me to offer saving drafts in later runs. For today, copy the drafts above and fill in the [ask: ...] parts.

About this item

It is easy to let the inbox decide the day. This skill reads your calendar and the last day of email first, then gives you one page: the three things that need you today, your calendar with conflicts flagged, every email in a clear group, and drafts of the replies that matter.

It reads and drafts. It never sends, archives or deletes anything, and the first run is a dry run that saves nothing at all.

The example is a dry run on a made-up calendar and emails pasted into the chat, with the connectors off. A run with Gmail and Calendar connected is still to come.

What you get

  • Three things that need you today, at the top
  • Today's calendar with conflicts and prep flagged
  • Email in five groups, including senders to unsubscribe from or filter
  • Reply drafts for everything that needs you today, saved to Gmail when you say yes if your connector can

Good fit

  • Anyone with a busy inbox who starts the day reacting to email
  • Founders and freelancers whose clients email at all hours

Not for

  • Shared team inboxes
  • Anyone who wants email sent for them

Questions

How do I set it up?
Once, in Claude on the web or the desktop app, about 10 minutes. 1. Download the skill zip. 2. Open Settings, then Capabilities, and turn on Code execution and file creation. 3. Open Customize, then Skills. Choose +, then Create skill, then Upload a skill, and pick the zip. 4. Open Customize, then Connectors, and connect Gmail and Google Calendar with your Google account. 5. Start a new chat with both connectors on and type "Morning inbox brief, dry run". After that, type "Morning inbox brief" each morning. On a Team or Enterprise plan, an owner turns these on first.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes, once it is set up on the web or the desktop app. Your Google connectors work in the Claude phone app, and you can use the skill there where your plan has skills on the phone. If the phone app does not pick up the skill, make a Claude Project on the web (Projects, then New Project), paste SKILL.md into its project instructions, and start your morning chats in that project from your phone. We have not tested the phone path yet.
Can I use it in ChatGPT?
You can try it as a Project; we have not tested it there. On the ChatGPT website, connect Gmail and Google Calendar at Settings, then Plugins (older versions say Apps). OpenAI lists both for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise. Then choose New project, open Project settings from the project menu and paste SKILL.md into the instructions. In a chat in that project, ask for your morning inbox brief, adding "dry run" the first time. If ChatGPT offers to send a draft, don't; copy it and send it yourself.
Does it send anything?
No. It drafts replies. When you say yes, it saves them as Gmail drafts if your connector can; if not, the drafts stay in the chat for you to copy. You check each one and press send yourself. It never asks to send. If Claude ever asks you to approve sending an email, say no.
How do I stop it reading my email?
Remove Gmail and Google Calendar where you connected them, at Customize, then Connectors in Claude, or revoke Claude's access in your Google account. It takes about a minute.
Can it run on a schedule?
Not yet. You ask for it each morning. Scheduled runs may come later as an add-on.
