Prompts and skills in ChatGPT
Run a prompt from the library in ChatGPT, keep it in a Project, and add a skill where your ChatGPT plan supports it.

Steps checked
Prompts in the library are written to run in ChatGPT as they are, on the free plan, on the phone and on the web; each item page shows where it was tested. A Project keeps the prompt and your files together so you do not paste them each time. Skills in ChatGPT exist for Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces; on a personal plan, a Project does the same job for one person.
On your phone
- Open the item in the library and tap Copy prompt. The first time, it asks you to join free with your email. A prompt with blanks asks you to fill them in first.
- Open the ChatGPT app, or chatgpt.com in the browser, and start a new chat.
- Press and hold in the message box, choose Paste and send it.
To keep the prompt, set up a Project on a computer (step 3 below); we have not confirmed creating one in the phone app.
On a computer
- Open the item and click Copy prompt (the first time, it asks you to join free with your email), or, once it is copied, pick ChatGPT under Open it in, which opens a new chat for you to paste into.
- Paste it (Cmd+V on a Mac, Ctrl+V on Windows) and press Enter.
- To keep it: choose New project in the sidebar, open the project's menu, then Project settings, and paste the prompt as the instructions. Add the files the prompt works from: PDF, Word, plain text (.txt) and spreadsheet files are accepted (up to 5 files on Free, 25 on Plus and Go, 40 on Pro). Project instructions override your global custom instructions inside that project.
- For a short standing note that applies everywhere, use Settings, then Personalization, then Custom instructions (on the phone: Settings, then Customize ChatGPT). Free and Go save up to 1,500 characters; paid plans 5,000.
Skills in ChatGPT
Skills use the same folder shape as our downloads: a folder with SKILL.md inside, plus optional scripts and references. They are available to eligible Business, Enterprise and Edu users, subject to the workspace's settings.
- In the sidebar choose Plugins, then the Skills tab of the directory.
- Choose Create, then Upload from your computer, and pick the skill you downloaded. ChatGPT scans it before it is available. We have not confirmed whether it takes the zip as it is or the unzipped folder; if the zip is refused, unzip it and pick the folder.
- In a chat, type
@and choose the skill.
We do not teach custom GPTs: personal plans can no longer create them, and OpenAI has scheduled them to retire on December 11, 2026, with their instructions moving into plugins as skills.
If it does not work
- Free upload limits: the free plan allows three file uploads a day; paste the text instead.
- No Skills tab: use a Project. Unzip the skill, paste SKILL.md into the project's instructions and add the files in its references folder. We have not confirmed that a Project accepts
.mdor.zipfiles; if one is refused, paste its text into the instructions instead.
